WASH FOR LIFE: Water, Sanitation en Hygiene in 2 gemeenschapsscholen

De water-  en sanitaire voorzieningen in Gambia zijn zeer pover. Met onze WASH FOR LIVE  gaan we de Kappa Circle School in Foni ( 532 kinderen) en de Brufut Basic School ( 2100 )  op een duurzame manier ondersteunen. Toiletten bouwen en renoveren, bouwen van lavabo’s om de handen te wassen met recyclage van het water voor een kleine banenplantage. Samen met het Ministry of Health te Gambia wordt eer gedurende 3 jaar een hygiënebewustmakingsprogramma gegeven.

In 2024 en voorjaar 2025 zullen we de technische installaties realiseren en de implementatie van het bewustmakingsprogramma loopt  over 3 jaar.

PROJECT DETAIL

In light ofthe recent philanthropic gesture ofproviding boreholes and sanitation facilities to two schools in the West Coast region of The Gambia, specifically, Kappa Primary School in Fooi, and Brufut Upper Basic School in Brufut-it is crucial to ensure that these vital resources contribute effectively to the holistic well-being and sustainability ofthe communities they serve. To accomplish this goal, a comprehensive sensitizJltion program will be implemented, integrating elements of drama and music on an annual basis. This program aims to actively engage students, educators, and community members in adopting and promoting proper water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices over a three-year period at each school.

This initiative, aptly named "WASH for Life," is designed not only to educate hut also to inspire enduring behavioral changes and foster a sense of stewardship toward the newly provided facilities. By instilling a culture ofresponsible water usage and hygiene practices, we envision a healthier and more resilient community, where the benefits of these essential resources are maximiz.ed for the long-term betterment ofall.

OBJECTIVES

1. Educate students, teachers, and community members on the importance of WASH practices for health and well-being.

2. Raise awareness about the significance of maintaining and sustaining the newly donated boreholes and toilet facilities.

3. Promote behavior change towards adopting hygienic practices in daily routines.

4. Foster a sense of ownership and responsibility within the school community for the upkeep ofWASH facilities.

5, Empower students to become advocates for WASH within their families and wider communities.

KEY ELEMENTS

1. Drama Performance: A specially crafted drama will be performed by students or local artists, highlighting scenarios related to proper hygiene practices, the significance of clean water, and the responsible use ofsanitation facilities. The drama will incorporate relatable characters and real-life situations to resonate with the audience.

2. Music Presentation: Musical performances, including songs and skits, will complement the drama to reinforce key messages about WASH practices and the importance of maintaining the newly donated facilities. Catchy tunes and lyrics will be used to capture the attention o f the audience and encourage active participation.

3. lnteractive Sessions: Interactive sessions will be integrated into the event, allowing students to actively engage with the performers and participate in discussions about WASH topics. Tuis will include Q&A sessions, role-playing activities, and group discussions to encourage dialogue and knowledge-sharing.

4. Visual Aids: Visual aids such as posters, banners, and multimedia presentations will be used to enhance understanding and reinforce key concepts. These visuals will feature colorful illustrations and informative graphics to complement the live performances and provide additional context.

5. Demonstrations: Practical demonstrations on proper handwashing techniques, toilet usage, and water conservation methods will be conducted to demonstrate the correct procedures and encourage hands-on learning.

6. Peer Education and Mentoring: To promote sustainability, student leaders or peer educators will be trained to serve as ambassadors for WASH within their schools. These individuals wilt be empowered to lead peer--to-peer educational sessions, organize WASH-related activities, and advocate for the continued maintenance and utilization of the donated facilities.

7. Monitoring and Evaluation: Ongoing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms will be implemented to assess the impact of the sensitization activity on students' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to WASH practices. Feedback from participants and stakeholders will be gathered to inform future iterations of the program and ensure its effectiveness in promoting sustainable hygiene behaviors.

Overall, the sensitization event will serve as an effective platform to educate, inspire, and empower students to adopt and promote WASH practices fora healthier and more sustainable future .

POST-EVENT ACTIVITlES

• Facilitate discussions and debriefing sessions after the performances to address any questions or concerns raised by the audience.

• Distribute informational materials and pamphlets containing practical tips for maintaining good hygiene practices and maximizing the benefits of the newly installed facilities.
• Encourage students to take ownership of WASH initiatives by forming hygiene clubs or committees tasked with promoting cleanliness and sustainability within their schools.
• Establish follow-up mechanisms to monitor the impact ofthe sensitization activities

and provide ongoing support and guidance to schools in implementing WASH best practices.
